| Our Weekend with Single Malt Scotch, Beer, West Virginia and the Stompin' Guy of North Baltimore County Part One Getting There Hey kids! It's time to load up the car we're going on an adventure to the mountains of West Virginia and the infamous Purple Fiddle. My experience with the "Fiddle" has been of great joy. The kind of joy one wants to re-visit as often as possible. It is like a lovemaking session with magnificent pleasure only instead of sweaty passion you insert food, music and unusual people. When we left our cosmopolitan Stephens City, VA pad we knew this trip would require some sacrifice. This weekend called for an indoor camping experience at the Tally Ho Mountain Lodge in Thomas, West Virgina. There are slim lodging pickins' in Thomas, but once you read the Tally Ho web site and see its proximity to the Mountain State Brew Pub it is the choice of nine out of ten potential overnight customers. The log cabin facade gives a wonderful first impression as you wind into town from the south up Route 32. The restaurant next door is convenient and a good value. Without going into great detail I give it a 3.5 taco rating. Why? The server had a nice tan. She was pleasant. She kept the water glass and coffee cup full. She was attentive and not overbearing. She served excellent food. Our table ate the following: eggs over easy, home fries, a Western Omelet, two plate fulls of sausage gravy and biscuits. She flirted casually with her eyes and made the table feel comfortable, relaxed and in a zone, Her hypnotic service sent our team of experts home with a feeling of culinary euphoria after a night libation study at the Mountain State Brewing Company and Pub with barkeep Kate from Ohio and the foot stompin' time of the Purple Fiddle herein to be referred to as PF. Part Two (to be continued) PF, BO, LSMFT PF= Purple Fiddle Bo= PU LSMFT= For those old enough to remember cigarette commercials, Lucky Strike Means Fine Tobacco |
| Cary Street Café, Richmond, VA I always visit here on my many visits to Richmond. You get a good cross section of the neighborhood residents. The bartender/ servers are kooky/ wacky and friendly. I usually don't read the menu. I just order the day's special. The beer selection on tap is varied. On my last trip I enjoyed several of the"Sweaty Betty's" from a Colorado brewer. It is Blue Moonish without the orange slice. The music varies. On my first visit we enjoyed the sounds of Neil Diamond and Barry Manilow. I was told the cook chose the station. My next venture we listened to "classic rock". Finally it was 60's music and later The Spaceheaters took the stage, but I had to leave to catch the next version of "So You Think You Can Dance". Before I exited I tried the hot wings. Yummy. I recommend this joint. It gladly receives 225 Charleston, SC A groovy rooftop hangout for beautiful girls where the gentlemen's mouths generally hang open and eyes pop out of their heads. We drank "Stella!". All of the "talented" servers were blond, sexy in tight outfits and not bad at their job. Our appetizers were tasty although I can't remember what they were because of the numerous distractions. I think I recall something with Calamari in it. We began the night, just four married guys at sunset looking over the city from our rooftop table. As the evening changed to night the bridge in the distance illuminated and by the arrival of darkness emerged a beautiful sight with an ocean storm rolling in behind it. We packed it in as most of the umbrellas were being folded and left discussing the wonderful food. No. The great beer. No. We chatted about the extremely talented staff of young ladies who worked 225 as the elevator door closed and we moved on our way to the sushi bar down the street where we shared the room with "Hair Band" Dokken. I rate this place for food and beer and for the excellent service. |
